Every Free Official Indiana Property Tax Tool, in One Directory

Gateway, PPOP-IN, the DLGF transparency portal, county GIS portals, SDF data, township lookup, memo library — the complete map of free government tools for Indiana property taxpayers, and what each one is actually for.

Indiana's state and county governments publish a surprising amount of free property tax software — portals, databases, and lookups that answer most taxpayer questions without a phone call. The catch is that they're scattered across a dozen domains with overlapping names, and nothing official tells you which tool answers which question.

This is that missing directory: every free official tool worth knowing, organized by the question you're trying to answer.

"What is my property assessed at, and why?"

  • Your county assessor's portal — the public window onto the county CAMA system, with your parcel's AV, record card detail, and (in many counties) sales data. Which platform your county runs, and what each shows, is covered in our county assessor software guide.
  • DLGF memo library — the primary source for the rules behind your assessment: annual agricultural base rate certifications, classified land rates, deduction legislation summaries. When a blog (including ours) cites an Indiana property tax number, the memo library is where to verify it.
  • DLGF township lookup — resolves which township and district a property sits in, which drives your rate.

"Where does my tax rate come from?"

  • Indiana Gateway — the state's local government finance platform. Every unit's budgets, levies, debt, employee compensation, and TIF reports are public here. The Taxpayer Portal shows proposed budget and levy notices for your parcels and estimates taxes from AV and deductions — most useful during fall budget hearing season.
  • The DLGF transparency portal — SB 1's statewide portal decomposing the rate, levy components, and circuit-breaker credits behind your specific bill. Full walkthrough in our transparency portal guide.

"How do I file or pay something?"

  • PPOP-IN — statewide e-filing for business personal property (Forms 102/103/104). See the PPOP-IN guide.
  • Your county treasurer's payment portal — e-check (~$1–2 flat) beats cards (~2.5%); the safe route and fee tables are in Paying Indiana Property Taxes Online.
  • County auditor deduction forms — homestead and other deduction claims are filed with the auditor; the state form inventory lives on the DLGF's deductions pages, and the homestead guide covers the ones that matter.

"What did properties actually sell for?"

  • STATS Indiana's sales disclosure data — the research-grade export of the SDF filings behind every conveyance. County portals surface some of the same data parcel-by-parcel; STATS gives it to you in bulk.
  • County GIS portals — Beacon and Elevate counties expose recent sales on the parcel view, the raw material of a comps-based appeal.

"Is my appeal / my county's data any good?"

  • DLGF ratio study documentation — the state's annual check of county assessment quality; the concepts (including the COD statistic) are decoded in What Is a COD Score?.
  • Indiana Board of Tax Review's online portal — state-level appeal filings run through IBTR's e-filing system; our IBTR portal guide walks the process.

Note

A pattern worth internalizing: official tools are organized by which office runs them — assessor, auditor, treasurer, DLGF — not by your question. That's why answering one real-world question ("why did my bill go up?") routinely takes three portals. The pipeline guide maps questions to offices so you only visit the right one.

Where Free Tools Stop

The official stack is genuinely sufficient for one parcel, one county, one question at a time. What it can't do: search across all 92 counties at once, show year-over-year AV history in one view, normalize the parcel-number and data-format chaos between systems, or watch your parcels for changes. That layer — built on top of the same official data, with provenance shown — is what our property lookup, Indiana explorer, and data API exist for, and the whole landscape (free and paid) is mapped in the complete Indiana property tax software guide.
